Congratulations to the varsity soccer team for its thrilling, history-making 1-0 victory over Norte Vista in the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 championship game on Saturday evening in Corona. Senior Fredy Santos scored a beautiful, long-range goal for the Mustangs mid-way through the first half. The Mustang defense played incredible soccer, consistently frustrating the Norte Vista attack that had been scoring 4 goals per game all season. Junior goalie Edwin “Gato” Monterrosa stopped a Norte Vista penalty kick with 12 minutes to go...and the Mustangs played the final ten minutes with only nine players due to two red cards! The championship is Salesian’s 6th CIF championship in soccer (‘64, ‘04, ‘07, ‘09, ‘10, ‘21).
The Mustangs continued their hot streak with a 3-1 victory over Bell High School in the first round of the CIF State Tournament on Tuesday, June 1st. Senior Ernesto Vergara and Christopher Ramirez and junior Julian Vazquez scored for the Mustangs.
Salesian will host West Torrance in the CIF-State semi-final round on Thursday evening at 5:00 pm. You may purchase tickets at this link: https://gofan.co/app/events/322161
